Nowhere but anywhere

A useless blog by and for useless people. Mostly a place for fandom things (based on the laundry list of fandoms I have) and random other tidbits I find important or interesting. This blog also goes days at a time without updating, so don't expect to see giant chains of posts or anything.

I’d love to know how this mistake was made. What was going through their heads at the factory?

Dreamworks is doing something even Pixar hasn’t tried: A black female heroine

DreamWorks Animation Studios has announced the addition of a black female heroine (gasp!) to its repertoire of white dogs, green ogres, snails, Neanderthals, pandas, white people and Antz. In doing so, it joins an elite club consisting of … well, nobody.

Not one major Hollywood studio has released a 3D animated feature starring a black character.

You know what bothers me the most about the whole “allies should be part of the acronym” ridiculousless? It doesn’t even make sense semantically.

You’re an ally of LGBTQ+ people, right? So if there was a letter for allies in there, you’d also be an ally of yourself. An ally of allies. Who are also allies of allies. Of allies.

I guess what I’m saying is, allies need to be kept out of the acronym for their own safety, lest the infinite recursion eat up their poor brains.

In therapy this morning, my doc and I were talking about coping techniques, since I’ve been having higher levels of anxiety and more PTSD episodes recently.

When I’m in that pre-anxiety stage—you know that part where you can feel the panic rising, but there’s still time to prevent a full on meltdown? When I’m at that stage, the best thing for me is repetitive, calm action that involves my hands and a little bit of my brain. A distraction.

Piano, meditation, coloring, needlework are all excellent, but not always practical. And sometimes I need something fast.

Best thing for me? Games. I thought I’d share my favorites.

Online—No thinking required

  • Calm.com: Not a game, but very soothing images along with calm music and guided meditations in short increments. Good place to start. (Free)
  • Orisinal Games: collection of simple in browser games with pretty graphics. Favorites for relaxing play are “The Crossing” and “Wings over Water”. (Free)
  • Music Catch 2:  Collect musical notes as they fall in time to instrumental music. Particularly good if you find rhythm to be calming. (Free)
  • Flower Reaction:  VERY simple game with nice music. (Free)
  • Fishing Girl:  Go fishing with cute graphics and soft music. (Free)

Online—Puzzle, a little thinking required

  • Loops of Zen:  Puzzle game with ambient music. (Free)
  • Auditorium:  Part puzzle, part just moving a mouse around, all with great music. (Free)
  • Machinarium: Amazing puzzle game in an immersive world. If you like Myst, Limbo etc, you will like this. One of my favorite games of all time. (Free demo)

Mobile games for when you’re out and need a distraction

  • Lyne (iPhone, Android):  Puzzle game. Trace lines with your fingers to solve—very soothing and takes a little concentration. Constantly updated with new puzzles. ($2.99)
  • Quell Reflect (iPhone, Android):  Move a silver ball through the puzzles to collect raindrops. Amazing soundtrack and sometimes quite challenging at higher levels. ($.99)

i’ve been playing flower reaction for like 15 minutes and it has really kept me feeling kind of calm. this is awesome resource, thank you

i’ve been meaning to reblog this again to share w/ some people and someone just reminded me.

(I don’t really care about the picture, so I’m talking about gays, let’s just put the flag there.)

Alright, I hear a lot of people say, we need more gays in TV shows, we need more gays in video games, and trans, and queers, and so on and so forth.

Yeah… No. We don’t. Gay people are, sorry for some of you to hear, but a minority. Shocking I know. If you got 10 people in a room, on average maybe 1 or 2 would be gay. Maybe.

So when a TV show or a video game has one gay person in the whole cast and that’s it… that’s accurate. Not a lot of people are gay. As a whole, yeah there’s tons of them, but statistically, trans, gays, queers, and whatever, are a minority to the average population. This doesn’t make them lesser or shitty, and I’m not attacking them. I’m just saying that statistically, you wouldn’t see one as often as you would normal people in TV. So no, you don’t need a cast that’s super diverse, and includes all different kinds of people EVENLY. Let me stress this, Evenly. Yes, casts can have gays, and POCs, and trans, but more often then not, the cast will be a majority of straight cis people. This is just how it is.

"you wouldn’t see one as often as you would normal people"

"normal people" being straight/cis/white

and there’s your problem right there

OP, are you honestly naive enough to think the way the media represents queer people is at all acceptable or were you just attempting to get a rise out of people?

Let’s just counter this with three main points:

1) The questionable “1 in 10” ratio aside, I’d like to see where you got the idea that the number of cishet people in media is at all proportional to the number of them in real life. Fact is, they’re heavily overrepresented, because saying 1 in 10 characters are queer is really stretching. Cishet people are not just a majority of who we see on TV and in video games, they’re practically all we ever see because queer characters are preposterously rare.

2) Believe it or not, LBGTQIA people are not solitary creatures. We are not like a noble gas, spreading out to fill a space as much as possible and refusing to bond with the other queer molecules. We do, in fact, actually hang out together and speak to each other. The idea that somehow you’ll only ever see one queer person in any given group is ridiculous, and it reeks of tokenism.

3) This may come as a surprise to you, but what little representation we do get is often quite subpar. LBGTQIA people are upset by the lack of representation not only because there’s hardly any, but because whenever we actually get any, seventy percent of the time it’s written by a cishet who’s operating off of gross stereotypical ideas. See, the hope of seeing more queer characters isn’t just hoping to see more characters, it’s also the hope we’ll get consistently good characters.

As a side note, you are not any more “normal” than me just because you’re straight, and you’re not any more normal than anyone else who isn’t straight and/or cisgendered.
